How to Get Here
Groningen is the capital city and main municipality of Groningen province in the Netherlands. The capital of the north, Groningen is the largest place as well as the economic and cultural centre of the northern part of the country. This is one of the reason that the city is really well connected. You can learn more about this beautiful city, and its range of sights and entertainment, here.
By Plane
You will most likely arrive in the Netherlands at Schiphol, Amsterdam International Airport. The easiest way to travel to Groningen is by train. Schiphol has an underground train station conveniently located near Schiphol Plaza, just a short walk from the luggage claim area. The Dutch railway system, operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), is easily identifiable by its distinctive yellow and blue colors. Follow the yellow illuminated signs marked “To the trains” to find your way to the station.

Tickets and Public Transport in the Netherlands
Traveling with public transport in the Netherlands requires an OV-chipkaart, which is valid across all public transportation systems. If your trip involves switching between different modes of transport, it’s important to check out with the first provider and check in with the next.
For example:
- If you take a train to Amsterdam and then switch to a bus to reach the city center, make sure to check out at the train station and check in again when boarding the bus.
- The same applies when transferring between different train companies.
