About the 2024/25 TaalX2 Lecture Series

The TaalX2: Discourses of Discrimination series explores how language both reflects and reinforces systems of social inequality. Rooted in Critical Discourse Studies (CDS), the series examines how linguistic and semiotic practices contribute to the normalization of racist, xenophobic, sexist, and other discriminatory ideologies.

Over the past three decades, CDS has provided vital insights into how racist, xenophobic, sexist, and homophobic/transphobic ideologies are reinforced by the language and semiotic practices of influential social actors and institutions.

This year’s series invites Research Master’s (ReMA) and PhD students across the Netherlands to engage with CDS as a powerful analytical lens in the study of language in context. Through these events, we aim to strengthen the visibility of the UG Faculty of Arts and the broader Sector Plan for Linguistics within national and international CDS research networks.
